Students enjoy hands-on activities, academic growth, and new friendships

By Gemma Kasnic and Adalyn Rodriguez

From June 8–12, Dean McCarthy led the Crusader Summer Institute at Cardinal Newman High School. The week-long program gave students the opportunity to learn, grow, and have fun while staying active during the summer.

Focused on academic enrichment, personal growth, and fostering a positive learning environment, the institute helped students strengthen their skills, build confidence, and connect with fellow classmates.

Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of engaging activities. They reflected on Bible verses to deepen their faith and understanding of Scripture and enjoyed hands-on experiences such as making ice cream and yogurt parfaits. On Friday, the week concluded with a farewell Mass, bringing students together in prayer to celebrate what they had learned and the friendships they had formed.

“The most important lesson I learned was forming new relationships with friends.”

— Kyla Willoughby

Students worked together, tried new activities, and gained valuable experiences both inside and outside the classroom. The program encouraged teamwork, creativity, and a love of learning.

For many participants, the experience was about more than academics.

“The most important thing I’ve learned at CSI camp was putting God first and getting better relationships with God through the Bible, while also focusing on the body, mind, and spirit.”

— Josiah Albino

Josiah’s reflection highlights the unique mission of the Crusader Summer Institute. Students were encouraged to grow in their faith, strengthen relationships, and become the best versions of themselves. By focusing on the body, mind, and spirit, the program provided a meaningful and memorable summer experience.

The Crusader Summer Institute gave students a rewarding week of learning, friendship, and faith while helping prepare them for a successful school year ahead.
