Cardinal Newman High School’s freshman class gathered on September 16 for a special retreat centered on faith, friendship, self-discovery, and building a strong sense of community.
Students started the day with a delicious breakfast featuring hot pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, muffins, pastries, fresh fruit, and more. The retreat officially began with a warm welcome and an opening prayer service before students participated in a series of small-group activities. Icebreakers and team-building games gave freshmen an opportunity to have fun and get to know their classmates.
Upperclassman volunteered throughout the day, serving as group leaders and mentors to the freshmen. Their involvement helped create a welcoming and supportive environment as students participated in each activity.
During the “Who Am I?” and Faith Shield activities, students shared their interests, values, and personal experiences with one another. They also wrote letters to their future selves describing who they hope to become and outlining their dreams and goals for their four years at Cardinal Newman.
“The Freshman Retreat gives our newest Crusaders an opportunity to deepen their faith, form meaningful friendships, and recognize that they are already an important part of the Cardinal Newman family,” said Campus Ministry Director Mrs. Janet Joyce-Cooke. “It is also inspiring to see our student leaders welcome and mentor the freshmen as they begin this exciting new chapter.”
The retreat concluded with a liturgy at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, bringing the freshman class together in prayer and providing a meaningful close to the day.
The Freshman Retreat is an important Cardinal Newman tradition that helps students strengthen their relationship with God, connect with their classmates, and recognize that they are supported throughout their high school experience. It marked an inspiring beginning to their journey as Crusaders and their path toward Building Life’s Champions.
