OCTOBER 11, 1933 – JULY 17, 2026

Samuel Franklin Budnyk, known to thousands simply as “Coach,” passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Hammond, Indiana, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame and served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps before becoming the first Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Cardinal Newman High School in 1961. Over the following decades, he built one of the most decorated coaching careers in Florida high school history with 278 football victories, championships across multiple sports, and more than 150 players who went on to earn NCAA Division I scholarships.

Beyond the wins, Coach Budnyk was a pioneer for equality in athletics and a devoted family man, sharing 65 years of marriage with his wife, Maurita, and raising five children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He is remembered as a mentor who shaped generations of student-athletes, instilling in them discipline, character, and the belief that anything is possible.
