The School Counselors work with each student over their four years in high school from adjusting to the independence of becoming a high school student to the successful and smooth transition to the college-level. Throughout their time at Cardinal Newman, students will have continuous contact with both their School and College Counselor as they work to excel in their high school course work. In order to accomplish this, the School and College Counselors work collaboratively to assist all students.
Additionally, School Counselors work in conjunction with Campus Ministry to provide counseling in other areas, including but not limited to: bereavement, socialization, anti-bullying, alcohol and drug prevention, and much more. Campus Ministry and our School Counselors work to cultivate the social and emotional development of each student as well.
School Counselors meet with each student one-on-one at least once a semester. These meetings provide a check in on the student’s social and emotional well-being as well as an opportunity to check on grades, study habits, organization and time management. The School Counselors work in conjunction with recommendations from the College Counselor as well regarding which courses a student should take along their high school path to not only meet their state and Cardinal Newman graduation requirements but to also increase their academic rigor and challenge.
Academic Support
At Cardinal Newman High School, we strive to encourage students to be engaged and proactive in gaining support for their academic studies. At any point in the year, students are encouraged to speak with their School Counselor so that the levels of support can be explained and implemented. The varying levels of support are explained below:
- Office Hours
- All faculty members are available after school each day from 2:30pm – 3:15pm to provide students with additional clarification and support. Students may use this time with their teachers to review particular concepts, to make-up any tests and quizzes after an absence or to ask follow up questions to gain a better understanding of class material.
- National Honor Society Peer Tutoring
- For those students needing additional support, students who are members of Cardinal Newman’s National Honor Society are available to tutor in a variety of subjects. Students should speak with their School Counselor to discuss how to go about requesting an NHS tutor.
- Paid Tutoring
- Some students prefer to work one-on-one with a teacher for a more comprehensive and intensive tutoring session. The School and College Counseling office has a list of paid tutors who are all educators, many of which are faculty members at Cardinal Newman. If a parent or student would like to inquire about a paid tutor, please contact your School Counselor.
Referrals
School Counselors will also happily assist in providing referrals for outside counseling/therapy services as we have several therapists, counselors and psychiatrists that we have worked with over the years.
Helpful Study Tips
In addition to the study strategies that many students already use, we encourage students to take the recommendations of their current teachers as they will be able to provide additional strategies that can be most beneficial in their course of study and at their academic level. For any students looking for additional study tips. Please refer to the document below that was compiled by our Academic Dean, Mrs. Irene Heidelbauer.
