The Cardinal Newman English Department is dedicated to ensuring the college and career readiness of our students in the areas of reading, writing and verbal expression. Through a comprehensive four-year program, students read a diverse range of classic and contemporary literature and challenging informational texts spanning various subjects, fostering the development of knowledge, insights, exploratory skills, and expanded perspectives. Furthermore, our curriculum includes writing assignments encompassing narrative, informational, and argumentative tasks, emphasizing the importance of writing logically with substantive claims, sound reasoning, and relevant evidence. For those seeking greater academic rigor, we offer honors courses in English I and English II, as well as AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition.  Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn St. Thomas University credit for American and British literature.
