The Cardinal Newman High School’s Social Studies Department is committed to providing a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum that fosters informed, responsible, and engaged participants in a democratic society. Our approach to learning emphasizes critical thinking, research skills, document interpretation, effective communication, and expository writing. We believe that a mere chronological recitation of events is insufficient for preparing students for the complex and rapidly changing world they will encounter post-graduation. Our program covers a wide range of topics, including the examination of diverse global cultures, human perspectives across time, and the dynamics of power, authority, and governance. While fostering global awareness and interconnectedness, our program also reinforces the ideals, principles, and practices of American citizenship in a democratic republic, tracing the history of our nation. At CNHS, students must complete three years of Social Studies classes, including World History in grade 9, United States History in grade 10, and American Government and Economics in grade 11. Most students choose to pursue a fourth year of Social Studies through various elective classes. We offer courses to all grade levels and accommodate diverse class configurations, including individualized support, Honors courses and Advanced Placement options.
