The Mathematics Department at Cardinal Newman High School is committed to meeting the diverse needs of all students in preparation for a world where mathematical skills are increasingly crucial. To achieve this, teachers prioritize the development of problem-solving abilities, recognizing that they are central to mathematics and applicable across various academic domains. Using a range of instructional methods, students are introduced to and afforded ample practice with mathematical concepts, striking a balance between calculator and non-calculator problem-solving. Further, the department underscores the significance of algebraic foundations, which are integral to success in all mathematics levels and provides additional support for students requiring assistance in building strong foundational skills. With a variety of course offerings, students have the opportunity to excel at different levels including college preparatory, honors courses and four Advanced Placement courses. For graduation eligibility, students must earn four credits in mathematics while at Cardinal Newman.
